LOCAL Government and Public Works Minister Daniel Garwe, who is also the Zanu PF chairman for Mashonaland East Province, has called for the people of Zimbabwe to embrace local currency, the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG).
Speaking on the sidelines of the Constitutional Amendment Bill number 3 awareness campaign ahead of the Parliamentary public hearings in Murehwa recently, Cde Garwe said it is critical for Zimbabweans to love and support their local currency.
“We cannot develop at our pace using other nations’ currency, but ours can take us far,” Minister Garwe said.
“We must embrace our ZiG and love it more than the way we love foreign currencies like the United States Dollar.
“ZiG is our currency, nothing else. It is supported by our minerals, which, among others, include gold and lithium. President Mnangagwa has seen it prudent that we have our currency. For us to be called Zimbabwe, we must have our currency, and for us we have our ZiG.
“The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe has assured us that the currency is strong. So I want to appeal to you all to embrace and have confidence in our currency.”
Cde Garwe advised other sections of society not to abuse the local currency by using the black-market rate to determine the strength of ZIG.
“I know there are some elements, including kombi operators and tuck shop owners, who have the tendency of refusing local currency. That should stop henceforth. Learn to love your currency just the way you love foreign currency.
“People should be aware that ZiG is going nowhere, it is here to stay, and we should embrace it.”
Zimbabwe is introducing new series of ZiG notes, which will be in circulation starting from April 7, 2026.
The introduction of these new notes is a significant milestone in the country’s currency reforms.
