RENOWNED sculptor, Dominic Benhura, has urged people to support and embrace talent observed at grassroots.
He told H-Metro that identifying and nurturing such talent was key.
“It’s important to identify and support talent, especially at a tender age.
“Passion comes from support and motivation and, if we ignore our children’s passion, we are definitely stopping them from pursuing what they can do better.
“I hope the Government will introduce art subjects, even at kindergarten level, so that they grow with it and those who are passionate will take it up as careers,” he said.
“People should do things out of passion not for survival. If people get into an industry for survival, for example in the arts sector, they end up spoiling the market with piracy, undermining the reputation of the industry globally and suffocating it slowly.
“Young talent needs resources, space and exposure to encourage them,” Benhura said.
Benhura also spoke about competition in the industry.
“I can’t say there is competition since God blessed us with different approaches and execution of creativeness.
“I do not believe we can compete on that basis.
“I respect and appreciate all original art works and enjoy seeing them.
“It is supposed to pay but I think those who do piracy are making money since they get regular orders and move volumes at low prices,” he said.
