‘Lover’ killer granted bail

over to the police was granted bail by the High Court last Friday.
Tichaona Phillip Chamunorwa’s lawyer, Mr Clement Phiri, successfully made the application before High Court Judge Justice Chinembiri Bhunu.
Justice Bhunu ordered Chamunorwa (59) to deposit US$500 bail with the Marondera clerk of court and reside at Gondo Village in Chihota until the matter is finalised.
Chamunorwa was also ordered to report every Monday and Friday at Mahusekwa Police Station between 6am and 6pm, surrender his passport and not to interfere with witnesses.
Prosecutor Ms Junior Mugebe said Chamunorwa committed the offence on August 10 this year.
Ms Mugebe told the court that allegations against Chamunorwa were that he was the employer of the victim, Mrs Beauty Mutasa-Handson (38).
Chamunorwa allegedly drove his Mazda 323 to House No 2 Tsindi Close in Yellow City Marondera and invited the victim to accompany him to Nyameni on work-related issues.
Mrs Mutasa-Handson got into the car and the accused allegedly drove off taking the direction of Longlands strip road. Chamunorwa stopped the car near Muteki Farm where he had a heated argument with the woman.
It is alleged that Chamunorwa subsequently shot her in cold blood on the left breast, right shoulder and back of the head and she died on the spot.
He drove for more than 20km with the body of the woman and handed himself over at Marondera Central Police Station.
Chamunorwa confessed to the shooting and also surrendered a Ross 38 revolver used in committing the crime.
The State is expected to call witnesses who saw Chamunorwa allegedly pumping the bullets into Mrs Mutasa-Handson.
The magistrate remanded Chamunorwa – who was not asked to plead – to October 26 this year.
