A 28-year-old man from Mutare has been arrested after police allegedly recovered 122 prepared dagga cigarettes and 20 sachets of loose dagga with an estimated street value of US$405 during an operation in the city’s industrial area.
Acting Manicaland police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the incident.
He said the suspect, Samuel Carlos Tiengane, was arrested by members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police Canine Unit following a tip-off.
“On June 26, 2026, at around 6pm, members of the ZRP Mutare Canine Unit were conducting patrols along Dublin Road in the industrial area when they received information that a man was allegedly dealing in dangerous drugs at Mwaera Garage.
“Acting swiftly on the information received, the officers proceeded to the location where they identified and arrested the suspect.
“A search conducted of the satchel he was carrying led to the recovery of 122 prepared dagga cigarettes and 20 sachets containing dagga,” said Asst Insp Chinyoka.
He added that the recovered drugs were seized and are being kept as exhibits while investigations continue.
“The recovered dagga has an estimated street value of US$405. The suspect is currently assisting police with investigations as inquiries into the matter continue,” he said.
He commended members of the public who continue to provide information to the police, saying community cooperation remains critical in the fight against drug trafficking and substance abuse.
“We urge members of the public to continue supplying the police with credible information on criminal activities taking place within their communities.
“Such cooperation enables us to respond quickly and effectively, helping to keep our communities safe,” said Asst Insp Chinyoka.
He warned those involved in the illegal drug trade that police would intensify operations targeting dealers and suppliers of dangerous drugs across the province.
“Those who engage in the sale, distribution or possession of dangerous drugs should know that the long arm of the law will catch up with them.
“We remain committed to flushing out drug dealers whose activities threaten the health, safety and future of our communities, particularly young people,” he said.
Asst Insp Chinyoka also encouraged parents, guardians and community leaders to play an active role in discouraging drug and substance abuse, describing it as a growing concern that requires collective action.
The arrest comes as police continue to intensify operations aimed at curbing drug-related offences, with law enforcement agencies maintaining that dangerous drugs remain a major driver of crime and social problems.
The suspect is expected to appear in court upon completion of investigations.
