CHEVRONS stand-in Test captain Richard Ngarava has credited the team’s formidable pace attack and collective team effort after leading the hosts to a memorable innings-and-85-run victory over Bangladesh in the one-off Test at Harare Sports Club.

The emphatic win secured Zimbabwe’s second consecutive Test series victory, marking the first time the Chevrons have achieved such a feat in their Test history.

Ngarava, who captained the side in a Test for the first time, said the victory was built on months of hard work and the quality within Zimbabwe’s bowling ranks.

“I think we have got a nice pack of bowlers, champion bowlers. The results speak for themselves, and the hard work the boys have put in got us to where we are now,” said Ngarava.

Zimbabwe’s bowlers dominated throughout the match, dismissing Bangladesh for 140 in the first innings before wrapping up the tourists’ second innings for 255 to seal one of the country’s most convincing Test victories.

For Ngarava, the victory carried added significance as he fulfilled a personal ambition in his maiden outing as Test captain.

“As I walked into this Test match, there was one thing I was thinking about, which was making history. Zimbabwe had never won back-to-back Test series before, so it’s quite special to be leading a team to that achievement,” he said.

The left-arm seamer insisted the milestone was a reward for collective effort rather than individual brilliance.

“In every sport, you play as a unit. Everyone contributed, and I really feel that’s what brought us to where we are. We must not forget the hard work the boys have put in over the past few months.”

Zimbabwe’s recent resurgence has seen different players deliver match-winning performances, something Ngarava believes is becoming a defining characteristic of the side.

“It’s quite important to develop those habits. We work together as a team and recognise who’s having a good day. That one guy takes the team forward, while everyone else supports him. Hopefully, it continues for a long time.”

Fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani once again starred with the ball and, in the process, became Zimbabwe’s third-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket.

Ngarava was full of praise for his fellow seamer.

“Blessing is a champion bowler, and that’s all I have to say. He’s a champion bowler, and we expect him to keep going.”

The Chevrons’ impressive run comes after a challenging period over the past year, but Ngarava believes those set-backs helped shape the team’s current mentality.

“There are always ups and downs in life. You learn from both the bad and the good experiences. It was important for us to go through that period because we mastered how we need to go about things and how we need to play our cricket. Imparting a positive mindset to every player is also part of the lesson.”

Ngarava also highlighted Zimbabwe’s ability to exploit familiar home conditions, saying the team had made the most of its local knowledge.

“We have got an idea of the conditions we have and the advantage of playing at home. Whichever team comes here, we know the conditions better. We just need to bowl as many good balls as we can.”
