A 62-year-old man has appeared in court on accusations of attempting to defraud an unsuspecting home seeker of US$50 000.

Lovejoy Nyamande was denied bail when he appeared before Harare magistrate Evelyn Mahavakure on Friday.

He will be back in court tomorrow for his bail application.

It is alleged that sometime this month, Nyamande hatched a plan to defraud a desperate home seeker, Trinity Mukewo, by obtaining fake title deeds of stand number 635 Good Hope Township in Harare.

It is further alleged that he also managed to get a fake identity card belonging to Malvern Simbarashe Gono, the legitimate owner of the stand.

The court heard that he then contacted Mukaro selling a stand for US$50 000.

They agreed to meet at Embassy Real Estate on January 17, but Mukewo verified the title deeds at the Deeds Office and realised that they were fake.

He did not alert Nyamande, but just told him to come the following day for full payment.

Mukewo then tipped off detectives who waylaid Nyamande.

Nyamande was arrested after receiving the money and signing an agreement of sale.

He was searched and a fake national identity card in the name of Gono was recovered.

Essel Zinhiva appeared for the State.
