KEEN to resuscitate the boxing sport countrywide, the World Boxing Welterweight champion, Charles Manyuchi, is set to launch the country’s first national boxing league in Chivhu, Masvingo on Saturday. The league will be staged at Chivhu Hall and 36 pugilists from all over the country have since been roped in for the event. According to Manyuchi, the occasion will be set as a league that will be staged every month from one province to the other.
“The plan is to give a chance to boxers from all over the country. I am a boxer who did not come from a big city, as you may know I come from Mutoko, personally I believe that there are many talented boxers in small cities and towns that is why we have decided to stage the first league round in a small area like Chivhu,” said Manyuchi.
The 26-year-old boxer said that his team had agreed with his sponsor Mr T35 to make the event an open tournament that will give room to both senior and junior boxers.
“Together with my sponsor Mr T35 we have decided to make the event an open tournament so as to accommodate both the senior and the junior boxers and so far we are expecting to have about 18 bouts,” added the World Welterweight champion.
The national team boxing coach, Mpilisi Moyo, applauded Manyuchi for the event, describing the idea of having a national league as a way of revamping the sport.
“We all know that Manyuchi has become an inspiration to local boxers and he has just displayed a good gesture, this shows that he did not forget where he came from. His idea of coming up with a national league will be helpful in restoring the boxing status in the country,” said Moyo.
