POLICE in Matabeleland South have launched a manhunt for three unknown murder accused persons who fatally struck a good Samaritan who had offered to help a man whose vehicle had broken down at J Mafuyana Township in Maphisa.
The callous murder occurred last week, after the now deceased, Chelesani Moyo (32) and of Falcon Mine Compound in Maphisa offered to help one Tinashe Ngwenya, whose car needed a push start after developing a mechanical fault.
Ngwenya was in the presence of his girlfriend, Sinikiwe Ncube.
According to police, on June 29, at around 3.30AM Ngwenya, who was driving a Nissan Sunny and with his girlfriend Ncube decided to park at J. Mafuyana Township grounds.
The now deceased Moyo came and inquired why the two were parked there in the dark of the night and Ngwenya told him that the vehicle had a mechanical fault and could not start thus they required a push start.
“Moyo offered to help them by pushing the vehicle. During the time he was pushing the vehicle, three unknown accused persons who were armed with machetes suddenly appeared and charged towards the vehicle.
During the process, one accused person hit Moyo on the back of the head with a machete,” said Matabeleland South police spokesperson, Inspector Chiratidzo Dube.
She said following the attack Moyo ran away for a distance of about 100 metres and collapsed while Ngwenya, upon hearing the altercation disembarked saw the three accused persons.
One accused raised his machete intending to strike Ngwenya on the head but he blocked and managed to get hold of the machete using his hand and wrestled with the accused and as a result, he sustained serious injuries on the hands.
Ngwenya escaped from his assailants who were in hot pursuit.
“At around 6AM the following day, an informant made a phone call to ZRP Maphisa Post, informing that he had seen a dead body at Mafuyana grounds. The lifeless body of Moyo was found lying on the ground with a cut on the back of the head. The body was positively identified by a relative,” said Insp Dube.
