ZIMBABWE Republic Police in Matabeleland North Province on Saturday held the Officer Commanding Sports Gala in Hwange in preparation for the Commissioner General’s Sports Gala slated for next month. Five police districts in Matabeleland North took part in nine disciplines with Victoria Falls emerging the overall winners. The teams competed in men’s soccer, women’s soccer, volleyball, squash, pool, netball, athletics, cricket, darts and chess.
Provincial police spokesperson Namatirai Mashona said the games were used to select teams that would represent the province.
“The overall winners were Victoria Falls district who won the highest number of games. Hwange district were the runners up followed by Lupane while Provincial Headquarters (PHQ) came fourth. The games are in preparation for the upcoming Commissioner General’s Sports Gala,” she said.
Nkayi district came last.
Victoria Falls district emerged winners in athletics while Hwange was second.
Chess was won by Lupane while Victoria Falls were runners up.
Hwange beat their neighbours, PHQ by seven wickets in cricket before accounting for Nkayi 1-0 in men’s soccer final.
Hwange’s female soccer team also beat Lupane by the same scoreline.
Victoria Falls’ volleyball men’s team beat PHQ by two sets while the tennis category was won by Hwange who beat PHQ 6-2, 6-3.
Victoria Falls were second runners up in men and female tennis categories.
Nkayi only won the darts category where its team beat PHQ who revenged with a win in Pool over the same opponents.
PHQ and Hwange dominated in squash in both men and women categories.
