A SAKUBVA man landed himself in trouble when he was ordered to pay a fine of $100 for unlawful possession of mbanje. Innocent Chitaurire was arraigned before senior Mutare magistrate, Mrs Sekai Chiundura facing charges of possessing and selling mbanje without a trading licence. He was convicted on his own plea of guilty. It was the State’s case led by Mr Donald Mudadirwa that Chitaurire was found with 45 sachets of dagga weighing 133 grams at Price Kings, Mutare after police detectives had received a tip-off that he was a drug dealer. “Police detectives received information that he was a drug dealer and was in possession of mbanje. Upon searching him, they recovered 45 sachets of the dangerous drug in the pockets of his trousers. He failed to give a convincing explanation on why he was in possession of the mbanje and he was arrested,” said Mr Mudadirwa.

Asked on why he had committed the offence, Chitaurire begged for leniency as he attributed his bad behaviour to poverty and hunger.
“I was trying to earn a living Your Worship since I am unemployed,” begged Chitaurire. Mrs Chiundura warned him against using illegal means to earn a living. You should try legal methods to earn a living rather than resorting to illegal means. It is a serious crime, therefore I urge you to desist from dealing in drugs.”
