A MODEL, Calvin Njovo, says his brother’s addiction to drugs and substance abuse inspired him to be an advocate in the fight against the pandemic which has been leaving a trail of destruction in the country.

Calvin, who is a finalist in the Mr Heritage Zimbabwe, is determined to ride on his influence to raise awareness about the dangers of addiction, challenge stigma and inspire others to seek help.

He said his influence has come from watching his brother struggling with drug addiction.

The 24-year-old is a Metallurgical Engineering graduate from the Zimbabwe School of Mines.

He is the holder of the Mr Kadoma title.

“I am a dedicated advocate in the fight against drug and substance abuse, as well as healthcare accessibility for those in need.

“My journey as an advocate began with my brother’s struggles with addiction and witnessing his battle was a heart-wrenching experience that ultimately led me to find my purpose.

“Through his journey of recovery, I observed his resilience as he sought help.

“His transformation was a wake-up call for our entire family and ignited my passion to understand addiction as a complex issue affecting individuals, families and communities,” he said.

As a model, Calvin has won many awards.

He is also a finalist in the upcoming Mr Heritage Zimbabwe pageant, which is scheduled for December 22.

“I entered this pageant because I envision a Zimbabwe that recognises the values of its people and heritage, prioritises health and fosters a resilient society.

“As a title holder, I plan to leverage this platform to raise awareness about addiction, challenge stigma, and inspire others to seek support.

“I also aim to promote healthcare accessibility for all.”

This year, he founded the Calvin Skiri Foundation.

“Although the foundation is still in its early stages, I have initiated awareness campaigns through social media education.

“My ultimate goal is to expand the foundation’s reach and impact and I look forward to collaborating with Mr Daves Mudimba, a counsellor at Rebirth Wellness Hub – Mental Health Consultancy.

“A pivotal moment in my modeling journey came at the Mr and Miss Zimbabwe School of Mines Pageant 2023.

“It was here that I met Pardon Khaya, the founder of Truth Modeling Academy. Pardon offered me my first formal modeling training, equipping me with the skills and confidence to excel in the field.

“His encouragement after my first show was instrumental in helping me realise my potential and pursue modeling with greater determination.”
