THE death of CAPS United technical director and assistant coach, Nelson Matongorere, has cast a shadow in the entire domestic Premiership.
Matongorere who was 68, died at a private clinic in Kambuzuma, Harare, on Wednesday night.
Club captain Godknows Murwira said he has been left in a state of shock and disbelief.
Matongorere suffered a stroke just hours before CAPS United’s clash against Highlanders at Barbourfields two weeks ago.
As fate would have it, CAPS United were also back in Barbourfields for a date with Bulawayo Chiefs, when Matongorere passed away on Wednesday.
Murwira attributed his success to Matongorere.
“I’m out of words with what happened, when I heard the news I was shocked because I have always known him as a strong man,’’ said Murwira.
“It is very unfortunate that he is no more and I’m extremely saddened with this huge loss.
“He played a key role in shaping my football career, he never accepted anything less from me because of the memories we shared since I was eight.
“‘Matinetsa’ was his favourite song and he made it a habit that each time, when it was necessary, he would ask me to sing it, the popular ‘Chembere dza Lodza’ song was also his preferred choice.”
Murwisa revealed that Matongorere was the man who convinced him to rejoin CAPS United after ending his union with Dynamos.
“Matongorere would always tell me that Dynamos was not for me, CAPS United is where I belonged and I kept turning his proposal down.
“He was after my signature after the 2021 AFCON finals, that’s when I realised how much of a big deal it was for him seeing me playing for CAPS United.
“The news came out that I had parted ways with DeMbare and he just called and the next thing I joined CAPS United.
“Every day he would make me feel at home and I’m convinced that he had a big hand in convincing coach Chitembwe to appoint me as the leader of the team.”
