A 31-YEAR-OLD taxi driver from Sakubva, Leeroy Tungunu, was on Friday robbed by five assailants who stole US$200.

Acting Manicaland police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, confirmed the incident.

Tungunu was hired at around 6pm by five men, including Shepherd Munesa (24), of Hobhouse, Mutare, to drive them from Zuva Service Station along Magamba Road to Odzi Business Centre.

They offered to pay him about US$70.

Munesa was  arrested the day after the incident after he was spotted by the victim walking around Green Market.

He is now assisting police with investigations.

“The complainant was hired by the accused persons to ferry them from Zuva Service Station at Magamba Road turn-off, Mutare, to Odzi Business Centre for US$70.

“The complainant ferried the accused persons with his Honda Fit, vehicle registration number AEF 8211, to Odzi Business Centre.

“Upon arrival, the accused persons disembarked from the vehicle and left the complainant in his motor vehicle. They returned later, asking Tungunu to take them to Vhoiri Business Centre.

“On the way there, one of the passengers asked him to stop the vehicle. As soon as he did, another man seated in the back grabbed him and demanded all his money.

“Fearing for his safety, Tungunu handed over US$200 in cash. Three of the suspects fled the scene, while Shepherd Munesa and one accomplice forced Tungunu to drive them back to Mutare City centre.

“They got out near Metro Peech Wholesalers and disappeared,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.

The next day, at around 1pm, Tungunu spotted Munesa at Greenmarket in Sakubva and alerted the police who immediately arrested the suspect and detained him at Mutare Central Police Station.

The stolen US$200 has not been recovered.
