THE battle at Gibbo Stadium this afternoon is more than just another fixture.
It’s survival, pride, and history colliding as Bikita Minerals face Highlanders in a clash of equals with everything on the line.
Both sides arrive with 29 points, separated only by goal difference. Both are dangling dangerously close to the relegation zone. And both know that one slip here could define the rest of their season.
Yet Bikita Minerals coach Wilson Mutekede is refusing to be lulled by Highlanders’ slump in form. For him, Bosso remain the formidable giant their name carries.
“It’s a tough game playing against Highlanders, who are traditional giants,” said Mutekede.
“We can never underestimate what Highlanders can do or bring to the table. The history, the experience, and the stature of that club demand respect. We have to push hard, stay focused, and ensure we get a positive result because against teams like Bosso, any lapse can be punished.”
The task before Bikita grows even harder with the return of Dutch coach Hendrik Pieter de Jongh, cleared this week to resume duties after securing his work permit.
Mutekede knows that shift on the Highlanders’ bench changes the complexion of the contest.
“They will be motivated no doubt. A new coach, especially one who knows the club and has had success there, can lift the entire dressing room,” he said.
“But that also puts pressure on us to be even sharper. We have to be ready to match their energy from the first whistle and impose ourselves.”
De Jongh’s reappearance at Bosso carries its own drama. Nicknamed The Dutch Nomad for his globe trotting coaching career, he previously guided Highlanders to the 2019 Chibuku Super Cup title before leaving abruptly in 2020. Now he replaces interim coach Try Ncube, returning to a side desperate for leadership and momentum.
It sets up Gibbo for a contest layered with emotion and pressure. For Bikita Minerals, it’s about proving their grit against a team with pedigree. For Highlanders, it’s about rediscovering their identity under a familiar face.
By sundown, one club will feel a step closer to safety. The other may be staring into the shadows of relegation.
