A NEW college, Entrepreneurship Institute of Zimbabwe will be opening its doors to the public in Mutare on June 15.The college is a member of the Sahwira Financial Services Group and was registered with the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development.
Among the accredited courses that the college will be offering include the Higher Examination Council courses like the National Certificates in Marketing, Human Resources and Accounting as well as the SAAA Diploma in Accountancy.
The college will soon be introducing HEXCO diplomas and Higher National Diplomas.
In addition to its own academic programmes such as certificate in Marketing and Public Relations, Business Management, EIZ introduced a unique certificate, diploma and advanced diploma in entrepreneurship.
The founding principal, Mr Charles Dahwa, said: “These three entrepreneurship programmes are unique in that they take students through the practical processes of conceptualising an innovation, proto-typing, launching the new business and daily effectively run and manage the business.
“In short, students are not going to be taught entrepreneurship from an academic perspective after which they write and pass an academic examination with the end result of still walking up and down the streets in search of employment.
“The EIZ Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma in Entrepreneurship not only drills the student in real life business start-up and management, but it focuses on manufacturing profit and non-profit entrepreneurs, thus manufacturing businesses and non-profit institutions.”
He said the certificate in applied entrepreneurship enrols students who could not attain tertiary education and thus acquired at most A-Level education.
“On the other hand, the Diploma in Applied Entrepreneurship recruits those whose highest education is a tertiary diploma. The Advanced Diploma enrols students whose highest education is a university degree.
“In particular, the certificate, diploma and advanced diploma are three distinct practical qualifications in entrepreneurship development and one does not graduate from the certificate to the diploma and later advanced diploma as is the norm with most academic qualifications.
“What is strikingly similar with these three entrepreneurship qualifications is that all the candidates should make a deliberate choice of preferring starting, running and owning their own new business or organisation over seeking for employment.
“This willingness to start and own one’s business/organisation is very important because these three entrepreneurship qualifications are not meant for use to further one’s studies neither to seek for employment.
“While entrepreneurship research has shown that three key factors are required for entrepreneurship to succeed, that is, willingness, capacity and opportunity, the philosophy at EIZ is that willingness to become an entrepreneur reigns supreme,” said Mr Dahwa.
