AFTER losing the One-Day International (ODI) series to Afghanistan, Zimbabwe hope to redeem themselves as they shift attention to the three-match Twenty20 series, which starts on Saturday at Harare Sports Club.
While the ODI series sweep to Afghanistan dented the Chevrons’ hopes of qualifying for the 2023 Cricket World Cup, as they remain rooted on 12th position with a paltry 35 points from 15 matches, there is still plenty to play for in the shortest format of the game.
The three-match T20 series against Afghanistan serves as part of Zimbabwe’s final preparations for the International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier B 2022, which forms the final stage of the qualification process.
Zimbabwe will host the eight-team qualifying tournament slated for July 11 to July 17 in Bulawayo.
Building some momentum in the lead-up to the tournament will be key.
The two teams have met 12 times in the T20 , with the visitors winning 11 games as compared to the Chevrons’ solitary victory.
The Chevrons will be hoping to change that during this series, pencilled in for June 11, 12 and 14 at Harare Sports Club.
Coach Lalchand Rajput intends to use the games as preparations for the World Cup Global qualifier.
“We have already played South Africa A, Namibia and now we face Afghanistan.
“Playing these teams should give us the much-needed preparation for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers,” he said.
