Cancellation of top-of-the-table clash between Simba Bhora and Golden Eagles has provided third-place outfit Herentals with an opportunity to shoot to the top of the Northern Region Soccer League (NRSL) table.
But they need to win their match against Chinhoyi Stars at Motor Action Sports Club on Saturday.
A win for the Students will see them leapfrog both Simba Bhora and Golden Eagles, who are currently first and second on the log, respectively.
The game between Simba Bhora and Golden Eagles has been postponed due to the death of Simba Bhora midfielder Barnabas Mushunje in a car accident on Tuesday.
Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off between Herentals and Chinhoyi is now set to headline this weekend’s NRSL fixtures.
The Students enjoy the best defensive record in the league so far after conceding seven goals in 17 matches.
Their defensive prowess is one the key reasons behind their form, which has seen them collect 37 points.
Herentals have 11 wins, four draws and two losses.
Only Simba Bhora and Golden Eagles have amassed more points, with the former on top of the log standings with 39 points from 17 games.
Golden Eagles have 38 points from the same number of games.
However, Herentals coach Celestino Benza is focusing on getting maximum points.
“We are not reading too much into numbers, but, instead, we just want to focus on the job at hand, and that starts with winning our match against Chinhoyi,” said Benza.
“Finishing in the top four is our major aim at the end of the season.”
In other fixtures lined-up for Saturday, Karoi United host Black Mambas at Chikwangwe Stadium, while fourth-placed Commando Bullets entertain Trojan Stars at Commando Barracks.
CUMA Academy and PAM FC will battle it out at Rimuka Stadium, while Ngezi U-19 hopes to bounce back to winning ways when they face Cam & Motor at Baobab Stadium.
The Mhondoro-based youngsters are fresh off a three-nil drubbing at the hands of Golden Eagles last weekend.
