VILLAGERS in Buhera Central have called for the speedy implementation of the Ruti Dam irrigation facility, which they say has potential to boost farming activities in the constituency.

Buhera Central legislator Dr Matthew Nyashanu said the irrigation system will be crucial in complementing the implementation of various farming projects in the constituency.

“We need an effective irrigation facility in the area from Ruti Dam. This is essential, especially at a time when the country has been hit by a prolonged dry spell which has affected all dry land farming activities. The project has been on the cards for a while now and we are calling for its expedition,” he said.

Dr Nyashanu said the irrigation facility will bring long term benefits in the face of erratic rainfall brought about by climate change.

Buhera is Manicaland Province’s most arid district and an effective and sustainable irrigation system will be key in enhancing its food security and nutrition.
