NEW: Harare clamps down on illegal water connections

Online Reporter

Harare City Council will soon begin disconnecting illegal water connections around the city, which it says are bleeding the capital millions of dollars’ worth of potential revenue.

In a statement on Wednesday, council said residents accessing water through illegal connections will be prosecuted.

“Council notifies all residents accessing council water illegally and or/ have non-functional or stolen water meters to urgently regularise their connections on or before July 6 at Old Mutual House.”

The local authority said the exercise was part of efforts to reduce non-revenue water.

“Failure to regularise before the stipulated date will attract penalties. Sanctions may include prosecution or permanent removal of their connections.”

Households and business premises with non-functional water meters, council added, can approach City of Harare for special arrangements for the replacement of water meters.
