NEW: Met department issues warning, as risk of veld fires rises

The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has issued a stern warning to Zimbabweans to be vigilant against the threat of veld fires, as the country faces heightened risks due to prevailing weather conditions.

In its weather outlook for Wednesday, the MSD said the current weather was conducive to the rapid spread of wildfires, urging citizens to exercise caution and take preventative measures to mitigate potential damage.

“Clear skies and cold conditions are anticipated in all areas except for places in the Eastern Highlands where it should be briefly cloudy. Afternoon: Sunny and warm. Overnight: Cloudless skies with cool conditions.

“Windy conditions increase the risk of runaway veld fires. Do not start any outdoor fires, and do not leave any fire unattended,” the MSD said.

In 2023, one person died, whilst 858 361,9 hectares of land were destroyed by veld fires from 3 717 veld fire incidents. The country also lost wheat valued at over US$800 000 due to the fires.

Over the past decade, more than 100 people have died as a result of veld fires.
