MEMBERS of Parliament have called for the enactment of a law that bars individuals who support sanctions against Zimbabwe from holding public office.
During debate in the National Assembly on Tuesday, ZANU PF chief whip and Gutu South MP Pupurai Togarepi said there are people who have made careers out of demonising the country and such behaviour cannot be allowed to persist.
“Each time the country gears for elections, such political malcontents rear their ugly heads and start speaking with forked tongues wherein they advocate for sanctions on one hand and still want to participate in fair and free elections on the other hand without any repercussions for their unpatriotic and destructive utterances and calls for the tightening of sanctions,” he said.
He called on Parliament to condemn people whose actions threaten national development.
His motion was seconded by Beitbridge East legislator Honourable Albert Nguluvhe (Zanu PF), who said political parties should not chase their interests in ways that act against Zimbabwe.
“If somebody wants to fight his country, subject his people to sanctions and lie about happenings in our country to the extent of misrepresenting facts that will then see Zimbabwe being seen as an unsafe country, it is time that we have laws that will deal with such people,” he said.
