Obama at crossroads

Shame Isaki
WHEN the then Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) crumbled, it was Ronald Reagan who was president of the USA and it was him who masterminded the demise of America’s rival superpower.
Mikhail Gorbachev was president of USSR then and he watched helplessly as his empire crashed with a thud.   After that nothing much was heard about Russia except the menacing militias who reportedly have been clandestinely funded by the USA as has been the case in most parts of the world.

Unfortunately, the mistake the world made was to assume that Russia had taken this thumping to mean the end of its military might. That was a big mistake indeed.

While Mikhail Gorbachev was overwhelmed by America’s scheming, there came a new generation of Russian spies and nationalists who back then would not do much to stop America from destroying them but what they could only do was take note of what had happened and wait for the most opportune time to hit back, and that time seems to be now from the look of things.

President Vladimir Putin of Russia has come out to be a shrewd politician and a tactician par excellence and from the look of things President Obama of America is no match.  Putin and his team are hurt with what happened to their country and political fathers and they are determined to correct that now, one way or the other.  Correcting they are, and the main actor in this whole thing is none other than Vladmir Putin.

His strategic retreat from presidency to become prime minister was crucial because it took him away from limelight and it gave him enough time to plan.

One thing I leant about President Putin is that the man is not into cellphones and the internet.  That is why America has been lost as to what Russia has been really up to, a good lesson for our country too. We also not need to be overly computerised especially when it comes to our security departments.

Now the coming in of Obama as US President made Putin’s work exciting because in all fairness events unfolding prove him to be more intelligent and cunning than his foe, Obama.  The way Putin masterminded and executed the plan to have Crimea annexed from mainland UKRAINE, was just out of this world.

The speed and precision with which the exercise was carried out left America and her allies with egg on their faces.  I was impressed, and even up to now the way Russia has been responding to measures being taken against it by America and her allies goes to a great extent to show that Russia is ready to go all the way.

Russia has responded to the sanctions imposed on it by banning all imports from all the countries involved in this standoff and this surely is a major drawback to some of these nations because Russia was their major trading partner.

Putin has also extended Edward Snowden’s visa and I believe Snowden has been a ‘‘very good’’ guest to Russia.  No doubt classified information from America on Russia has been released by Snowden and America’s worry is what is it that Russia now knows, and what are they going to do about it?

While NATO has been trying to build a case against Russia by apportioning  it blame on the shooting down of the Malaysian plane, Russian has deployed over  40 000 soldiers on the border with Ukraine to carry out ‘routine’ exercises.

This leaves Obama in a catch-22 situation because he cannot risk attacking Russia at this stage because Russian had long planned for this and is better prepared in terms of war.  Not only that, Obama is faced with the consequences of his predecessors’ actions on Iraq and ISIS is threatening to overrun the armed forces of Iraq.  Actually a greater part of Iraq has been occupied by the Islamic movement and it’s not an enviable position to be for Mr Obama.  Fire is burning in Lybia.

Israel and Palestine are in combat while Syria and Afghanistan are an unfinished business. All these war situations leave America at crossroads and while Obama is the most powerful man on this planet, I surely cannot envy his office right now.  The man risks leaving office with the tag of the worst US President or he risks leaving America very vulnerable. Could this be the end of America’s dominance? Let’s wait and see.
