OPERATION Chenesa Harare, launched by the Harare City Council, will be fully operational tomorrow.
Harare mayor, Jacob Mafume, said it is one of their key mandates as Council to collect and remove refuse as well as to deal with waste management.
Residents believe it’s a mandate the city’s leadership has failed to execute.
“We deal with a whole range of waste, toxic waste, sewage, paper waste and biodegradable waste, which requires a huge operation.
“However, the operation hasn’t been satisfactory in the past, hence the launch of Operation Chenesa Harare.
“The first stage of the operation is to clear the number of dumps that have sprouted, and we have over 600 illegal dumps where waste has accumulated in the suburbs.
“We have authorised the release of not less than US$2 000 to our district offices where residents, district officers and other stakeholders will work to remove illegal dumpsites in all 26 districts,” he said.
He said new equipment was bought, while others have been repaired to deal with waste on a weekly basis, and intermediate stations will also be created to cut the number of journeys that trucks make to Pomona Waste Management.
“Bins in and around the city centre will be installed to avoid litter and the operation will involve a new Tourist Police force to amend various litter laws and create an environment where rubbish doesn’t pile up.
“We have introduced dump shifts for dump clearance, and that’s why we are clearing the dumps in the city.
“We will repossess terminuses from ZUPCO and deploy municipal police to restore order by monitoring people littering to make the environment clean.”
