Police bust fuel smuggling syndicate

POLICE in Chisumbanje have busted a syndicate that was smuggling more than 1 000 litres of fuel from Mozambique into Zimbabwe.

Four suspects – Judas Mukovela from Checheche, Sipiwe Sithole from Chipinge, Aram Sithole and Energy Chikwakwa both from Chiredzi – were arrested following a tip-off.

Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, confirmed the arrests.

“Police at Chisumbanje received information that there was a broken down vehicle within GreenFuel Estate that was carrying drums of fuel smuggled from Mozambique. They reacted swiftly to the tip-off and intercepted the vehicle,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.

The four were arrested and police recovered 1 095 litres of petrol and 310 litres of diesel in drums and plastic containers.

The accused persons will appear in court soon.
