POLICE are carrying out a countrywide blitzkrieg targeting vehicles without registration plates and those illegally fitted with unauthorized gadgets like sirens, blue lights, bar lights and beacons.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the operation is already underway and sparing none, from family and company cars to Government and public service vehicles.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police has noted with concern that some motorists are deliberately removing number plates to evade identification after committing offences such as armed robberies, kidnapping, hit-and-run road traffic accidents as well as traffic violations including driving against the flow of traffic, through red traffic lights and lane violations while evading follow-ups on the traffic offences.
“Some vehicles are being fitted with illegal sirens, blue lights and bar lights which are reserved for authorized emergency vehicles. This causes chaos on the roads. Above all, the use of bar lights has also been noted to disturb the vision other motorists at night, thereby endangering road users,” said Commissioner Nyathi.
He said all vehicle without registration plates will be immediately impounded and only released once the proper registration process is completed and the plates are fixed on the vehicle.
Commissioner Nyathi added that all illegal unauthorised gadgets fitted on vehicles will be removed on the spot without excuses.
He called on motorists to cooperate with the police during this operation for effective maintenance of law and order.
