A POLICEMAN sought to mislead the court yesterday that he was earning less than the monthly allowance he receives in US dollars.
He was warned by a magistrate not to lie in court.
Tedius Karungire was trying to deceive the court after being dragged by his former lover, Natasha Tendere, to pay maintenance for their child.
He ended up being ordered to pay $25 000.
He had offered $7 000 to Natasha, who was claiming $30 000, at the Harare Civil Court.
Karungire, who has three other children, insisted on the $7 000 offer, excluding medical bills, for the minor.
This was shot down.
Questioned about the medical bills, the police officer promised to include the minor on his medical aid scheme.
“I have other children who need my support and also they need school fees. Unfortunately, I don’t have the pay slip with me here but I get about $35 000 and US$75 every month,” Karungire said.
Presiding magistrate. Judith Taruvinga, advised him to be truthful about his earnings.
She also noted that he was getting US$175 as a cushioning allowance, instead of the US$75, he was claiming.
After rectifying the error, magistrate Taruvinga ordered Karungire to pay $25 000 with effect from July 30.
