The President met Cde Didymus Mutasa Zanu-PF), Mr Tendai Biti (MDC-T) and Ms Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga (MDC) on Tuesday at State House.
Cde Mutasa confirmed the meeting on Wednesday.
“We met the President as a follow-up to a joint meeting on violence that was addressed by the principals in Harare sometime ago. We want such joint meetings by the principals to be taken to other provinces like Bulawayo. In yesterday’s meeting the President said he wants to talk to the other principals first and then come back to us,” Cde Mutasa said.
Mr Biti and Mrs Misihairabwi-Mushonga could not be reached for comment.
The push for joint meetings of principals comes as the country gears for elections this year.
The MDC formations are against the staging of elections despite the expiry of the inclusive Government’s two-year tenure.
President Mugabe is insisting that elections would be held this year with or without a new constitution.
The constitution-making process is moving at a snail’s pace and Copac stands accused of deliberately delaying the process.
President Mugabe, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and MDC President Professor Welshman Ncube are expected to preach co-existence and tolerance at the rallies scheduled for the country’s 10 provinces.
