RESIDENTS in Ward 17 in Bulawayo are conducting multiple drug awareness campaigns in different areas to fight the drug abuse menace in the city.
Ward 17 Councillor, Skhululekile Moyo said they have conducted a number of drug awareness campaigns this month in their ward.“As a ward, we have had a number of campaigns and the aim has been to educate our youths on the dangers of these dangerous substances.
Our campaigns have covered most areas in Pumula and the likes of Robert Sinyoka, Isilwane Youth Centre, St Peters village, Mazwe village and we have had a number of engagements with the youths in Pumula North,” she said.
Councillor Moyo indicated that their goal in having these campaigns was to ensure that they reach out to every individual in the community.“The issue of drug abuse requires a multi-sectoral approach and this is why our campaigns have targeted all the people in the community because we have the youths who are abusing drugs and parents who are probably selling these dangerous drugs to them,” she said.
She stated they educate and have a number of activities during these campaigns with community members. “In these campaigns, we speak to the youths and we do this by conducting activities with them so that they get a clear picture of the implications of drug abuse.
We want to contribute to the end of drug abuse in the country starting with the communities where we reside. These campaigns are very crucial to us because drugs are destroying the lives of the youths,” she said.
Councillor Moyo said she was delighted that a number of youths were participating in the campaigns.
