The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) says it only managed to generate 62 percent of its expected revenue inflows during the first half of the year. REA executive director for operations Mr Blessing Machamaire said that 92 percent of the funds that the agency used to fund its programmes came from the Rural Electrification Levy.
“As at May 31 this year, the Rural Electrification Fund (REF) had realised about 62 percent of its expected revenue inflows.
“The main source of revenue for REF is the Rural Electrification Levy which accounts for about 92 percent of revenue,” he said.
“Fiscal allocation which was to account for about 3,6 percent of the 2015 projected revenue is yet to be received,” he added.
Mr Machamaire said from January to June 19 this year, a total of 187 rural institutions were electrified through grid extension.
He said six rural institutions were electrified through solar micro grid and twelve through biogas digester plants.
Mr Machamaire, however, said lack of funding had stalled the biogas and solar programmes.
“The programme for the biogas projects for 2015 was to be fully funded from the fiscus. Nothing has been received to date.
“About 50 percent of the solar programme for 2015 is to be funded from Government allocation. Nothing has been disbursed yet. REF has tendered for the supply of solar equipment for micro grid to be used at public institutions,” he added.
REA this year expects to earn about $8 million from its commercial services that it outsources. — New Ziana.
