ABOUT 74 500 poor smallholder farmers in Mutare, Makoni and Mutasa are set to benefit from the $6 million livelihoods kitty aimed at enhancing their production capacity by tackling cardinal causes of food insecurity in rural communities in a long-term and sustainable manner. The programme is sponsored by the United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID) to the tune of $72 million — of which $6 million — will be cascaded into support of smallholder farmers in the three districts in Manicaland.
The project, which will run for three years will also be implemented in Midlands and Mashonaland Central.
The Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs Cde Mandi Chimene last Friday launched the initiative — referred to as INSPIRE — at Dope High School in Makoni. The project will be implemented by Goal Zimbabwe (30 wards in Makoni), Sustainable Agriculture Trust (SAT) (27 wards in Mutare) and Practical Action (21 wards in Mutasa) and Technoserve.
