MINISTER of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Mary Mliswa-Chikoka, has said the micro, small and medium enterprises sector (MSMEs), has become an engine for sustainable economic growth.

She said the MSMEs were contributing over 76 percent of employment and 60 percent of Zimbabwe’s Gross Domestic Product.

Mliswa-Chikoka made these remarks in a speech, read on her behalf by Karoi Town chairman, Abel Matsika, during the Hurungwe Chamber of SMEs Expo, held last week.

“The Hurungwe Chamber of SMEs Business Expo is being launched this year for the first time and will create a great opportunity for business networking of local enterprises.

“This will include women, youth and community groups.

“Hurungwe has the Mana Pools and other small safaris in the Chirundu area and the Zambezi escarpment.

“Apart from exhibiting local products and services, we are promoting rural industrialisation, which is in line with NDS1.”

Hurungwe Chamber of SME chairperson, Mildred Makokola, told H-Metro the objective of the business expo was to increase linkages of SMEs to anchor companies in all the value chains while promoting investments in the marginalised areas.

“It is imperative to create both local and regional markets for SMEs, community, youth and women’s products and to provide a platform for business meetings that must result in joint venture opportunities,” said Makokola.

A delegate from Zambia, George Simeja, told H-Metro they attended the business expo to cement their partnership with Hurungwe Chamber of SMEs.

“When money in the business has been received, it must go back into the business.

“We conduct training in micro business simulation and farmer business.”
