Smuggler hides diamonds in underwear

TRYING to smuggle 72 pieces of diamonds hidden in an underwear to Mozambique backfired for a Chikanga man after alert detectives swooped on him at Forbes Border Post last week.

Tapiwa Brian Mhlanga (29) denied two charges of unlawfully dealing in or possession of precious stones and smuggling charges when he appeared before Mutare senior magistrate, Mrs Sekai Chiundura this week.

Mutare lawyer, Mr Farai Matinhure of Gonese and Ndlovu Legal Practitioners represented Mhlanga, while Mr Fletcher Karombe prosecuted.

Allegations were that Minerals and Border Control Unit Task Force received information to the effect that Mhlanga was in possession of diamonds that he intended to smuggle into Mozambique.

Detective Assistant Inspector Mpofu and Detective Sergeant Mucharuona proceeded to Forbes Border Post where they observed Mhlanga going through immigration formalities.

“Just after he went through the exit point towards Mozambique, the detectives approached him and identified themselves.

“Mhlanga ran away towards the direction of Mozambique and when he was caught, Mhlanga wrestled with the detectives until he was overpowered and handcuffed.

“72 pieces of diamonds packed in two plastic sachets were found in Mhlanga’s underwear after the detectives had conducted a body search,” said Mr Karombe.

Mhlanga failed to produce a permit that authorised him to possess the diamonds

The 72 pieces of diamonds were taken to Minerals Marketing Corporation of Zimbabwe in Harare for assaying and were found to be precious stones in terms of the Precious Stones Trade Act.

The stones weighed 127 carats and are valued at $14 335, 81.

Mhlanga was denied bail and remanded to December 7.
