Solar-powered boreholes for Maunganidze Irrigation Scheme

AS efforts to build better infrastructure in communities affected by Cyclone Idai continue, a solar system to power boreholes at Maunganidze Irrigation Scheme in Chipinge District is being installed.

The Zimbabwe Idai Recovery Project (ZIRP) and United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) are spearheading the project by installing new hybrid pumps.

ZIRP said the solar system is efficient and durable and can go for at least five years before requiring maintenance repairs.

It generates over 4 000W for each borehole and can pump nearly 300 litres of water per second from six boreholes.

As well as cushioning Maunganidze Irrigation Scheme’s operations from the effects of power outages, the move will save at least 75 percent in electricity bills and ensure uninterrupted power supply.
