Charles Nhemachena, the director-general of the government sport controlling body, said on Monday they were talking to sponsors to come on board and support the monthly awards. He said this would give them better mileage as it will be all-year round as compared to the one-off end-of-season function.
“We are talking to sponsors, we believe in the marketing of sport and then there would be more mileage to be derived from monthly awards as well,” said Nhemachena.
To make this effective on the part of the trekking of athletes, an independent selection panel to comprise the media and people from the national associations will be set up.
“We would like to come up with a purely independent committee to do the selections. We would like a situation where a thorough job is done and the best deserving candidates rewarded in the build-up to the national awards,” said the director-general.
Instead of waiting until the end of the year, he said, records of who is doing what and where will be known from the beginning of the year.
He said this would make it easier at the end of the year to collate results and ensure Zimbabwe’s best sportsperson was rewarded.
He said he was happy with the way the awards have been run so far and was full of praise for all behind the event.
“They have done a fairly good job. Of course there is always room for improvement in any life situation like that. We have managed to maintain the awards night as ‘the sporting event’ and we hope to see more corporate support,” said Nhemachena.
