Stage set for Magaya’s kiss of life to women’s football

WOMEN’S Super League is on the cusp of a revolution, and all roads lead to Yadah Hotel for the unveiling of a ground-breaking US$320,000 sponsorship package from Prophet Walter Magaya’s Heart Group of companies tonight.

Legislators, ZIFA Normalisation Committee, domestic club owners, local celebrities and esteemed guests are expected to grace the event.

The event is expected to run from 6pm to 9pm.

This massive deal is set to transform the women’s game, which has been yearning for support and recognition.

After years of struggling to find their footing, the women’s league is about to receive a kiss of life.

The sponsorship package is not just a financial injection but a comprehensive support system that will provide access to the Heart Stadium and its B arena for league matches, and assistance with playing kits and equipment.

This will enable clubs to fulfil fixtures and compete at a higher level, attracting top female talent and inspiring a new generation of female footballers.

Herentals, the 2023 champions, had no prize money for their success, but this sponsorship package will ensure that clubs are rewarded for their achievements.

They flexed their muscles yesterday in Malawi in their opening fixture of the COSAFA clubs champions league by thumping Nambia’s Ongos FC 3-1.

The Heart Group’s intervention is timely, as ZIFA’s Normalisation Committee had pledged to set aside US$200,000 for Women’s football, but the move seemed to have stalled.

FIFA had also set aside US$500,000 for Women’s football as part of a Covid-19 package, but the funds were allegedly diverted to other uses.

Magaya told Zimpapers Sport his wish for women’s football.

“I’m overwhelmed with joy to be able to give back to the women’s football community in such a way. This donation is a testament to the power of collaboration and the impact we can have when we work together towards a common goal,” said Magaya.

“As a passionate group that is advocating for women’s empowerment, I believe that this donation will be a game-changer for the women’s league. It’s a step towards creating a more level playing field and providing opportunities for our female footballers to shine.

“We are humbled to be in a position to make a difference in the lives of these talented women. I hope this donation will inspire others to join us in supporting women’s football. Together, we can create a movement that will elevate the sport and empower women to reach new heights.”
