OVER 5 000 people in Chipinge district have contracted sexually transmitted infections in the last quarter of 2014.
The high incidence has been attributed to growing prostitution as women are resorting to prostitution to make ends meet. The most prevalent STIs recorded in the district were chancroid, gonorrhoea, syphilis and herpes simplex.
Figures released by the National Aids Council on Tuesday showed that Chipinge recorded 5 419 STIs cases during the last survey that was done in the last quarter.
Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting, Chipinge National AIDS Council co-ordinator Mr Makwanya said out of the 5 419 recorded cases 2 015 were females while 3 404 were men.
Mr Makwanya said investigations were being done to find the current drivers of the STI upsurge.
“From the figures we have of STI-infected people it shows that something needs to be done and our organisation is working tirelessly to address the situation. We are into condom promotion and distribution. We have also engaged some stakeholders such as ZRP to help us in curbing prostitution in the town,” he said.
