Teen mum demands maintenance from ‘rapist’

A MARANGE teenager brewed a shocker at the Mutare Civil Courts when she demanded maintenance from a man she claimed raped her.

Precious Mutsonziwa claimed $82 for the upkeep of her one-year-six-months child whom she alleged was fathered by Brian Marange after being raped.

She told the court that at one time she was ordered to stay at Chief Marange’s homestead in Bocha when she was under the care of the Department of Social Welfare.

She alleged that during her stay Brian forced himself on her and raped her resulting in the pregnancy.

Mutsonziwa alleged that she reported the matter to the police, but Brian disappeared for eight months.

Marange could have none of her submissions, denying having fathered the child.

“I was not in a relationship with the mother of the child Your Worship. I am not prepared to pay her anything because I am not the father of that child.

“Your worship this girl is known for her lies. If I raped her as she claims how then did she took four months to report the case to the police,” Marange said bitterly.

Mr Poterai Gwezhira ordered him to pay $35 and advised him to go for DNA tests if he queried paternity. However, Marange declined the DNA tests saying it was expensive and could not afford it since he was under parent’s support.

“I am only 22 years Your Worship and I am not employed, where on earth will I find money for DNA tests?”

Mr Gwezhira dismissed his defence saying a 22-year-old person is not a minor.

“You have to work and find money for DNA or you continue to pay maintenance.”
