EMOTIONS ran high and rackets swung hard as nearly 100 young tennis stars battled it out at Girls College for the 15th edition of the Tarryn-Leigh De Souza Junior Memorial Tennis Tournament — a fiery tribute to a fallen tennis gem who left a mark too big to forget.
The courts were buzzing as 98 junior players from all corners of the country served up passion, power, and purpose in categories from Under-10 to Under-18 — proving that Tarryn-Leigh’s spirit still echoes loudly in Zimbabwe’s grassroots tennis scene.
The tournament, held in memory of the dynamic and fearless Tarryn-Leigh De Souza, has become more than just a competition — it’s a rallying cry for support, growth, and recognition in youth sport, especially for young girls.
“This tournament means everything,” said her father, Ali De Souza, his voice heavy with both pride and concern.
“Unfortunately, when these players reach 18, they seem to fall away. And it’s not a good reflection on our communities and our country. These youngsters, starting from grassroots level, should be pushed by their families and supported by sporting organisations.”
With energy on the courts and emotion in the air, the De Souza legacy is far from over — it’s just getting warmed up!
