MATABELELAND Tuskers have taken their cricket developmental programme to rural Tsholotsho where they identified a number of players at Nemane Adventist High School.
Tuskers’ development coach Joana Phiri said Tsholotsho already has a 13-member girls’ team and they were getting ready to take part in competitions within and outside the province.
“We have identified a number of talented players in Tsholotsho. They already have a team and we are looking forward to seeing them play in the inter-provincial tournaments,” she said.
Phiri said there was a perception that talented cricket players were only found in urban areas which was not true.
“People believe that players come from the urban areas and that people in the rural areas are not talented in such sporting disciplines which used to be a preserve of the minority rich. This is the third school from the rural areas where we have identified talented players,” she said.
So far Tuskers has been to St James and Inyathi High schools where they have set up development structures.
“Nemane High invited us to their school to help them with batting, bowling and fielding. We also donated some equipment to help them with the development of the sport,” she said.
Tuskers donated pads, gloves, six balls, one bat and a pair of stumps.
The team is coached by Muzwandile Dube and sports director Xolani Mumba.
“They have a game in Matabeleland North tomorrow and Sunday. They also have a boys’ team and they will be organising games from the first week of January against other schools,” she said.
Phiri said they also appreciated the support that the school headmaster Themba Ndlovu was giving to the teams.
