A UNIVERSITY of Zimbabwe (UZ) student yesterday escaped jail for theft of college property worth US$1 500.

He received a three-month wholly suspended sentence.

The property included a copper geyser outer shell and copper casing.

Isheanesu Tsigo (24) was found guilty when he appeared before Harare magistrate Yeukai Dzuda.

He was sentenced to three months imprisonment, which was wholly suspended, on condition that he does not commit a similar offence in the next three years.

In passing sentence, the magistrate said she had considered that Isheanesu was a first offender and the stolen property wasn’t of much value, and everything was recovered.

The State, led by Anesu Chirenje, proved that on Friday, at Manfred Hostel, a University of Zimbabwe security guard was on routine patrol when he heard noise coming from the roof of the hostel.

The unnamed guard teamed up with another security guard, Simba Matanga, and went to the corridor to check.

As they were approaching the toilet, the court heard that the two guards saw the accused jumping from the ceiling.

The security guard went into the ceiling and discovered that the accused had dismantled the copper geyser and had removed the outer shell and copper casing.

A police report was lodged leading to the student’s arrest.
