Volunteers needed for preps

THE Manicaland National Youth Games Local Organising Committee (LOC) has embarked on a concerted drive to lure volunteers ahead of the annual sporting fete in August, the Games volunteers manager, Joshua Matume, has said.

In a statement, Matume said they would not be picking volunteers from the streets, but choosing qualified people from various disciplines to help run the games

“We are targeting 300 local volunteers who will be in charge of various disciplines and activities in the forthcoming Zimbabwe National Youth Games to be held in Mutare from August 15- 23.

“The volunteers are in three categories; general, technical, health and administration. The locals will be operating from their homes.

“We are not just going to pick volunteers from the streets. We will choose qualified people from various disciplines to help us run the games,” said Matume.

According to Matume’s statement, the recruitment exercise of volunteers to assist in the preparations and running of the games will start on Monday, July 20 and end on Friday, July 24.

He said all those who interested should go and register at the Sports and Recreation Commission offices at Embassy Building along Second Street in Mutare.

“They should attach proof of qualification on their registration cards. Red Cross Society will help to select those who will assist in the Health Department.

“Training of the volunteers will start on July 31 at Mutare Polytechnic. Preparations are at an advanced stage, with various committees working flat out to prepare the groundwork.

“We set a record in terms of hosting in 2005 when we held the third edition of these games. We hope to surpass this record this year since we now have more qualified personnel in the various areas,” reads part of Matume’s statement.

Ten provinces will participate in the eight sporting disciplines that are to be competed in seven days.

The sporting disciplines are, soccer (men and women), athletics, basketball, volleyball, handball, netball, boxing and lawn tennis.

At least 3 000 youths from across the country will take part in the games, while 300 volunteers are expected to assist in the various areas.

Venues include Sakubva Stadium, Mutare Teachers’ College Marymount Teachers’ College, Mutare Polytechnic, Mutare Boys’ High School, Mutare Girls’ High, Dangare Primary and Chisamba Grounds.
