PEOPLE from across Midlands Province gathered at the Gweru Provincial Heroes Acre yesterday to commemorate National Heroes Day, honouring the country’s fallen heroes and heroines for their contribution to the liberation and development of Zimbabwe.
The commemorations brought together members of the public and other stakeholders to pay tribute to those who made sacrifices during the country’s liberation struggle and contributed to the development of Zimbabwe.
The Minister of State for Midlands Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Hon Owen Ncube, was expected to preside over the provincial commemorations.
According to Mr Clapperton Gutu, the regional director and heritage expert for the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe (NMMZ), who oversees historical sites and liberation war memorials, 288 war veterans are interred at the Gweru Provincial Heroes Acre.
The provincial shrine remains an important place of remembrance, preserving the history and legacy of Zimbabwe’s liberation war and honouring those who made sacrifices for the country’s independence.
