RESIDENTS of Bulawayo’s Mabuthweni suburb have been living with the stench of raw sewage for almost a month after a pipe burst.
The residents say numerous reports to the Bulawayo City Council have not brought relief.
The stench has filled homes, children can no longer play outside, and fears of a cholera outbreak are growing among residents.
Residents say whenever the area receives water, in line with the council’s weekly water-shedding schedule, the situation worsens as raw sewage backflows from toilets into houses. Cooking and eating have since become a nightmare for many families.
“I cannot even eat in the comfort of my own home because the smell is unbearable,” said a resident.
Ward 13 councillor, who presides over the suburb, Lovewell Mwinde, confirmed receiving a report on the issue.
“I received a call from a resident at 14:48 informing me about the problem. I asked whether the issue had been reported, and she said yes. I then asked whether it was reported at the Mabuthweni office or at town, and she said they had reported it to someone who works at the council,” said Mwinde.

He said he advised the resident to report the matter to the correct office and obtain a reference number for follow-up purposes.
“I also advised that residents should not keep quiet, especially if more than three days pass without action. They must inform me as well so that I can follow up,” he said.
