A 33-YEAR-OLD woman from New Magwegwe in Bulawayo was sentenced to 24 months in prison for attacking her daughter’s friend.
Panashe Mpofu appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Vakayi Douglas Chikwekwe facing one count of assault.
She pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 24 months in prison, of which six months were suspended on condition that she does not commit a similar offence in the next five years.
She will serve an effective 18 months in prison.
While sentencing, the magistrate noted that cases of assault have become a problematic issue in the city.

“Cases of assault are rampant in Bulawayo, not a day goes by without at least five cases being reported and some of these victims end up suffering from disability,” he said.
The court also took into account that the complainant was a minor and a blunt object was used to attack the complainant, and she suffered severe injuries which have kept her from attending school and she has suffered financial prejudice as a result of medical bills.
It was proven that on 8 November 2024 in Old Luveve suburb in Bulawayo, Mpofu saw her daughter walking together with the complainant Monalisa Ncube and two other friends.
It was heard that Mpofu, who was not happy to see her daughter in the company of the complainant, approached them and started hitting the complainant several times all over the body with a blunt object, resulting in injuries.
After the attack, the complainant reported the matter to the police, where she was referred to hospital.
