FILABUSI was rocked by horror scenes after a mine shaft collapsed at Hebenia Mine, leaving three people buried underground.
The incident occurred on 17 January. Two men were working inside when their day of hard labour turned into a fight for survival as tonnes of soil came crashing down on them.
Tragedy struck again when the wife of one of the miners, who was outside preparing food, noticed the ground shifting and rushed towards the shaft.
She was also swallowed by the collapsing earth.
Confirming the incident, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said rescue teams were battling to reach the trapped victims.
“The ZRP confirms a mine accident which occurred on 17/01/26 at Hebenia Mine, Filabusi, where three people were trapped after a mine shaft collapsed,” said Comm Nyathi.
“Two victims were working inside the shaft, while the third victim, who is the wife of one of the two miners, was outside preparing food. Upon noticing ground movement, she rushed to the shaft and was also trapped.”
Comm Nyathi revealed that the shaft is dangerously deep, making rescue operations difficult.
“The shaft is approximately 11 metres deep, and the victims are still trapped,” he said.
Villagers gathered at the scene in shock, praying for a miracle as rescue efforts continued late into the night.
