GOVERNMENT, in partnership with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (Zimstat), has launched the National Migration Data Strategy (NMDS) 2025–2030 to address longstanding data gaps that have hindered effective migration policy-making.

The strategy seeks to strengthen the collection, coordination and use of migration data to ensure decisions are informed by evidence, while promoting inclusive and forward-looking migration governance.

Migration remains a critical issue in Zimbabwe, affecting millions of citizens – from families dependent on remittances to communities responding to climate change and rapid urbanisation.

The new framework seeks to harmonise data systems and improve institutional collaboration, positioning migration as a key pillar in national development and regional cooperation.

In a statement, IOM Zimbabwe Chief of Mission Ms Diana Cartier said reliable migration data is essential for crafting policies that protect migrants while supporting broader development goals.

“The National Migration Data Strategy marks a critical shift towards a more coordinated and evidence-based approach to migration governance,” she said.

“By strengthening data quality, accessibility and use, Zimbabwe is better equipped to develop policies that protect migrants, support national development and respond to evolving migration dynamics.”

Chief Director in the Department of Immigration Ms Respect Gono highlighted the operational importance of accurate and timely migration data across Government and other stakeholders.

“As a custodian of strategic migration data, the generation of accurate and timely migration data has increasingly become essential for informed decision-making,” she said.

“The National Migration Data Strategy provides a clear framework for institutions to work together in generating trusted and policy-relevant migration data in support of national priorities.”

Zimstat Demographic Analysis Manager Perfect Makumbe said the strategy strengthens the country’s statistical system by formally integrating migration data into official statistics.

“The strategy strengthens the national statistical system by clarifying roles, improving coordination and embedding migration data within official statistics,” he said.

“It ensures that migration data is not only collected, but also analysed, disseminated and used responsibly to inform planning and development.”
