Zim marks Cuban Five anniversary

Herald Reporter
Zimbabwe yesterday joined hands with Cuba in commemorating the 15th anniversary of the arrest of five Cuban patriots who still languish in American prisons after a phony trial. The country showed its solidarity by joining an international campaign spearheaded by Cuba to help free the “Cuban Five” who were arrested on spurious charges of conspiracy to commit espionage and murder by the US administration. One of the five, Rene Gonzalez, was released leaving four languishing in American jails.

At a ceremony held yesterday, Cuba’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe Mr Enrique Antonio Prieto Lopez read a letter from Rene Gonzalez who urged the Cuban people to put yellow ribbons demonstrating to the world that people continue to wait for the return of their four compatriots still imprisoned in the US.

“I want this country to be filled with yellow ribbons. It cannot fail to be reported to the world that the Cuban people are waiting for four of their sons who are prisoners in the US,” read part of the letter.
