Fire guts barrack

SIX families were last week left homeless at Chikurubi Female Prison camp after fire gutted down their barrack, destroying property worth US$44 029.Acting officer in-charge at Chikurubi Female Prison, chief prison officer Otilia Ngirande confirmed the incident.
She said an electrical fault caused the fire.

“I can confirm the outbreak of a fire that destroyed a barrack that accommodated six families destroying property worth US$44 029 in our camp last week,” she said.

“The affected families are now living in a another barrack which is still under renovation. The fire destroyed school uniforms of the children of the affected families.”

The incident occurred when the barrack experienced an electrical fault which started the uncontrollable fire.
Residents tried to put out the fire but their efforts were in vain.

The fire brigade arrived an hour later but the building’s roof had collapsed and everything was destroyed in the inferno..
Chief Prison Officer Ngirande appealed to well-wishers and the donor community to assist the victims to ease the burden.
