THE Polocrosse Association of Zimbabwe says its teams competing in Underberg, South Africa, this weekend are not just chasing results but preparing the next generation for the world stage.
Five sides, including Under-14s, Under-21s, ladies, veterans, and a development team, will be in action from Friday to Sunday against highly experienced opposition.
South Africa are the reigning World Cup champions, while Zimbabwe is ranked sixth in the world and will host the 2027 World Cup in Harare.
“Zimbabwe currently holds the sixth position in the global open division rankings, a testament to our enduring legacy and competitive spirit. As we prepare for the upcoming South Africa tour, we’re not just focused on the scoreboard, we’re investing in a new generation of players whose talent and commitment are already turning heads internationally,” said team manager Camari Baker.
She said the team travels with belief. “While South Africa remains a formidable opponent, especially fresh off their World Cup win, we approach this challenge with confidence. Our junior ranks are brimming with skill, and the synergy between youth and experience gives us a decent chance to make a meaningful impact,” she said.
Baker added that the tour’s true value will be felt in the years to come.
“This tour is more than a test, it’s a stepping stone toward future greatness. We’re laying the groundwork now, building cohesion, sharpening tactics and ensuring our players are conditioned for elite competition. Zimbabwe polocrosse is on the rise, and we’re proud to represent our nation with passion and purpose,” she said.
The weekend promises fast-paced action, with Zambia also in attendance and scheduled to face South Africa. Polocrosse, a blend of polo and lacrosse, is played on horseback with racquet sticks and a soft ball, combining speed, teamwork and precision. Matches are divided into six-minute chukkas, testing both riders and horses to the limit.
