THE highly anticipated Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Conference, scheduled to take place at Manicaland University of Applied Sciences on Friday, is expected to draw high-level dignitaries from the Government, private sector, and academia.

Hosted by the country’s largest media house, Zimpapers and anchored by The Manica Post, the conference comes at an opportune time as the country formulates policies and strategies to adopt and regulate the emerging technology, ensuring the country keeps pace with other nations.

AI expert, Dr Evans Sagomba said four Cabinet ministers are expected to attend the conference, lending weight to this inaugural event, which aims to address critical issues surrounding the emergence of these new technologies.

“It is all systems to go for the inaugural Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning conference, which is the first of its kind to be held in Zimbabwe.

The event will be graced by Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation Science and Technology; Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services; Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services; and Primary and Secondary Education ministers.

“We have involved the Government as they play a crucial role in crafting AI policies and strategies for the country’s adoption. We have also invited representatives from major universities, including University of Zimbabwe, National University of Science and Technology, Africa University, Chinhoyi University of Technology, and Great Zimbabwe University, to showcase the AI-related degrees they offer.

“Furthermore, we have extended invitations to high school learners, as a key takeaway from an AI Conference in Rwanda highlighted Africa’s shortage of qualified professionals in this field. To address this, Zimbabwe needs to develop its own AI-trained talent. The conference will also feature academics specialising in AI, who will lead high-level panel discussions,” said Dr Sagomba.

Some of the partners on board include NetOne, Dandemutande, TelOne, Zimbabwe School of Mines, Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe, and the Zimbabwe Centre for High Performance Computing (ZCHPC), among others.

The Manica Post Editor, Mr Cletus Mushanawani, said all arrangements are in place to host this conference, which aims to foster collaboration between institutions of higher and tertiary education and players in the Information Communication Technology sector.

“We are thrilled to be among the first institutions to host such a significant event, which aims to bridge the gap between institutions of higher and tertiary education and ICT sector players. The conference has already generated considerable interest, with numerous institutions and schools confirming their participation. The choice of the venue, Manicaland State University of Applied Sciences is also ideal as the institution is one of the fastest growing State universities in Zimbabwe. As Zimpapers, we are collaborating with a number of institutions to enhance our brands visibility,” said Mr Mushanawani.

He added that the decision to host and AI and Machine Learning conference was also timely and significant initiative that underscores the growing importance of technology in shaping the country and individuals’ future.

“By bringing together institutions of higher and tertiary education, and the ICT sector, the conference provides a unique platform for collaboration, innovation, and knowledge sharing. The conference’s focus on showcasing innovations in AI and Machine Learning is particularly noteworthy, as these technologies have the potential to transform various aspects of our lives, from health care and education to business and governance.

“By highlighting latest developments and applications in these fields, the conference can help to accelerate the adoption of these technologies and drive economic growth. By fostering a dialogue on the ethics of AI and Machine Learning, the conference can help to establish best practices and guidelines that can inform the development of these technologies. The potential for collaboration between institutions of higher and tertiary education and the ICT sector is vast, and this conference can play a pivotal role in facilitating this collaboration,” said Mr Mushanawani.

Mr Mushanawani said by providing a platform for academic, industry professionals, and policymakers to come together, the conference can help to identify areas of common interest, explore opportunities for partnerships, and develop strategies for addressing the challenges associated with AI and Machine Learning.

“Ultimately, the success of the conference will depend on its ability to inspire meaningful action and collaboration among its participants. If successful, it could become a landmark event in the region’s technological landscape, driving innovation, promoting ethical practices, and fostering a culture of collaboration that can benefit a society as a whole,” he said.
